Next quarter class

Dear English 110 students,
I know some of you may not be very interested in science fiction (I know I wasn't when I started this class). But it's really not that bad at all. The most important thing to do is to keep an open mind. I you keep an open mind during the class, it will be a lot easier to get through. Most of the shows that we watched in class, weren't bad at all, in fact some were pretty good. Not all sci-fi is in space with aliens. Even episode hat are, there is still a good a story line, and I'm sure everyone o you can ind something to relate to. To keep up with the class, just make sure you know what work you have due what days. It seems like a lot of work but it's really only one small assignment not even every day. Make sure to picka topic for your analytical research paper, that you will enjoy. Also try to think of something that you wont have trouble researching. All in the class was fun and Leslie definitely makes it easier and more fun. There's nothing that is too hard to do in the class. Just complete the work and pay attention in class. Also attend class! It's part of your grade!

Farscape

I really liked the episode of farscape that we watched in class. I think it was really interesting that at the beginning it was set in present time, and through a black hole he entered another time and place. It was fun to watch because the main character was from earth, but was thrown into outter space. It's crazy to think that if something like that actually happened and you were in a totally different place. I think in the show he kept his composure very well due to the fact that he was seeing aliens for the first time and didn't know where he was. I know that if I was seeing the creatures he was, I would have freaked out. I liked the show because it showed how we as humans would react for the first time seeing aliens.
In terms of all the episode we watched in class, in the end I didn't think it was that bad. I had never really watched any sci-fi shows and wasn't into it all. The class definitely opened up my eyes, and the some of the shows were actually pretty good. Buffy of course is a classic, but some of the other shows we watched i had never heard of, or thought to watch. I think that Farscape was one of the better shows we watched, only because it did encorporate earth, so it was easier to understand. After this class I feel like all sci-fi is grouped together, when all shows are very different. Sci-fi isn't all aliens and spaceships (altough some are).

stng

I wasn't really a big fan of the episode that we watched in class. It was slow to progress and I wasn't drawn in at all. I know that I generally don't like Sci-fi but I've been willing to give it a try, and so far everything that we've watched hasn't been bad, I've even liked more than one. But this episode was just too much for me. It was typical sci-fi and didn't interest me at all. All though I didn't like the episode all that much, I did like the message that was being shown. They were trying to decide if Data, who it technically a machine, was able to make the decision for himself weither to be a part of the experiment. Having more robots like Data could help everyone a lot, but is Data's life worth it. Does Data even really have a life? In the episode it seen that he does not fully understand the emotions of humans, but he does have a soul. Data shows that he is able to love, showing that he can think for him self and is self aware. I think this episode brought up a very interesting dilema. It can be over practically nothing, but when making a desicion is the risk worth the outcome? In the episode they decided that Data wasn't worth risking. He was more like a human, and it would be unfair to make him.

All in all I didn't think the episode was horrible, even with small parts, I did enjoy the trial at the end. It showed the conflict in full effect. Even in sci-fi shows set far in the future, the conflicts are still relatable to every day life in this generation.

BSG

The part of the miniseries that we watched in class on Thursday was the first of any Battlestar Galactica episodes I have ever watched. Surprisingly I found it pretty interesting, it mixed both sci-fi and the real world. I especially liked the concept of humans and robots in a war. In the part that we watched in class the war had been over for about 30 years, and no one had seen a cylons since the war ended. I think that with the way technology is advancing, this could actually be possible one day.
The Battlestar Galactica ship in the show seems as almost a lone ranger. They have become scared of technology to hide from the cylons. They do not have any computers networked on the ship and a lot of it is still older versions of things. For example they still have phones on a chord, when technology is clearly way more advanced than that.
The miniseries reminded me a lot of I robot. The Will Smith movie were the robots create a mind of their own and try to destroy humans. The movie doesn’t take place as far in the future, they are still developing robots in the movie. In the miniseries though, the robots, or cylons have been around a while and actually tried to dominate humans.
It’s scary to think that something humans created can come back and destroy us. In the show humans had fought off the cylons once, but now no one has seen one in 30 years, and suddenly they come back. Earth doesn’t what know hit them and when it comes down to it, humans are to blame.Technology might become too much in the future and actually harm humans instead of help us.

Poem!

Willing to Die

A true hero will ceaselessly try
For his cause he's willing to die;
A true saint too has a heroic will
Yet there's no cause for which he will kill.

This poem stuck out to me, because of the title first. Than when i read the poem I really agreeded with it. No a days every one is all talk, but will never act upon what they say. A true hero is willing to die for what ever he is fighting. I doesn't need to make sense to everyone else, but if something is that important to you and willing to fight for, a real hero is willing to die for it. The poem is also saying that a saint has a herioc will, but still not a hero. It states that a saint has no cause for which to kill for. A hero will kill and be killed for a cause that means everything to them. A lot of people know are all talk, but when it comes to reality they would be scared and not willing to die.

Buffy

I really liked this episode because it showed a competely different side of the show. It questions the reality of Sunnydale. I think it is really iteresting how they throw out the idea that it all could be in Buffy's head. The entire show and everything that has ever happened was all a figure of her imagination. I think it was really smart that they added that Buffy had been in a mental hospital before. Buffy's acting was extremely good and she really looked scared that she never left the hospital the first time she went. The idea of Sunnydale and all the vampires actually could be a alternate reality in her head.
I also liked the show, because at the ending Buffy decides to stay in Sunnydale, but you dont really know if it is real or not. The visions of the hospital could be fake, or Sunnydale and the vampires could be all in her head. This episode gave the show a really different twist.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE!

My favorite movie is one that I know every one has heard of, and it's rare if you haven't seen it. It's a classic and kids today are still watching it. My favorite movie is Space Jams. It is such an original movie and is so entertaining. No matter who you are you can relate to the characters and understand what's going on. The movie combines sports, bugs bunny, aliens, and imagination. The movie is like nothing else, and if you've never seen it, you need to see it!! It is a classic and a very fun movie to watch. Even though their are cartoons, it is not for just kids, people of all ages love Space Jams.
